Do you know how to use animation for individual bullets by using multiple text boxes in PowerPoint?

You have already learned about all the Shape Effects available in PowerPoint 2010 for Windows except 3-D Rotation. In this tutorial, we remedy that omission by showing you how you can add a 3-D Rotation effect to make your shapes appear more three dimensional and prominent.

To see a sample presentation containing 3D Rotation effects in PowerPoint 2010, scroll down to the bottom of this page.

Note: Any shape that you apply a 3-D Rotation effect to needs to have some 3-D depth to show the rotation. You can add depth using details provided on the 3-D Options page.

Follow these steps to apply a 3-D Rotation effect to a shape:

  1. Select the shape with 3-D effects applied and double click it to activate the Drawing Tools Format tab in the Ribbon (see Figure 1). Within this tab locate the Shape Styles group and click the Shape Effects button that you can see in Figure 1 (highlighted in red).
  2. Shape Effects button within Drawing Tools Format tab of the Ribbon
Figure 1: Shape Effects button within Drawing Tools Format tab of the Ribbon
  3. This brings up the Shape Effects drop-down gallery as you can see in Figure 2. From the Shape Effects drop-down gallery, choose 3-D Rotation option (the last option).
  4. 3-D Rotation Options within the Shape Effects gallery
Figure 2: 3-D Rotation Options within the Shape Effects gallery
  5. This opens the 3-D Rotation sub-gallery (refer to Figure 2 above) that provides the following options:
  6. A. No Rotation

  7. Use this option to remove 3-D Rotation from a selected shape. You can use this option if the shape has 3-D Rotation applied which you want to remove.
  8. B. Parallel

  9. Provides ten variants that rotate the shape in different angles.
  10. C. Perspective

  11. Provides 11 variants that rotate the shape, and alter its rotation angle (perspective) from where you view the shape, so that farther edges appear smaller than nearer edges.
  12. D. Oblique

  13. Consists four variants that apply a very subtle rotation, almost as if a 2-D object is in a semi-3-D space.
  14. E. 3-D Rotation Options

  15. Brings up the 3-D Rotation tab of the Format Shape dialog box, from where you can customize 3-D Rotation Options further. This has been explained in detail in our 3-D Rotation Options For Shapes in PowerPoint 2010 tutorial.
  16. Move the cursor over any of the effects within the 3-D Rotation gallery to see a Live Preview of the effect. Click on an effect to apply it to the selected shape. In Figure 3 below you can see 3-D Rotation effect applied to the previously selected shape.
  17. 3-D Rotation effect applied to a Rectangle with previously applied 3-D effects

  18. Tip: Place your shape in the area that is not covered by the Shape Styles drop-down gallery as shown in Figure 3, so that you can see the Live Preview.
  19. Remember to save your presentation often.
