Advanced Video Options

Before we do so, it's important to understand that these abilities only exist so that you can use them when they are required, rather than using them just because they exist! Indezine News: Problems and Solutions

July 17, 2012

Geetesh Bajaj

You can give it a name -- call it a maze? Or call it a puzzle, a riddle, or even something as broad-defined as a question? What's common between all these words? They all have an answer or a solution. Would we be interested in questions or mazes that had no answers or solutions? Probably not -- and all audiences that attend your presentations will have the same answer. The thought for this week is to never highlight a problem that you do not have a solution for.

Learn PowerPoint 2011 for Mac: Getting Started with Motion Path Animations

July 17, 2012

Getting Started with Motion Path Animations

The main difference between Motion Path animations and other animations in PowerPoint (Entrance, Emphasis, and Exit animations) is that Motion Path animations allow you to cause any slide object to move along a path you choose. PowerPoint provides dozens of preset motion paths -- and you can also create your own paths as required. To add a Motion Path animation to any object on a PowerPoint slide, follow these steps.

Learn PowerPoint 2010 for Windows: Fade Effect for Video Clips

July 16, 2012

Fade Effect for Video Clips

When you insert a video clip in PowerPoint, you may find that the inserted video starts playing instantly causing a jarring interruption to the flow of your slides. Not only can the sudden movement within the video clip area disrupt the flow, but the sudden sound from the video clip may take the audience unaware. This sort of disruption can be worse if you have trimmed your video clip. Clearly this is not a very professional or acceptable state of affairs. Fortunately, this is avoidable if you opt to add a Fade In or Fade Out effect to the beginning and end of your video clip. This option, which is new in PowerPoint 2010 not only edits your video clips to make them appear and finish smoothly, but also provides a more enhanced look.

Learn PowerPoint 2011 for Mac: Motion Path Animations

July 13, 2012

Motion Path Animations

The three basic animation types in PowerPoint: Entrance, Emphasis, and Exit animations are something we have already explored. The fourth animation type is called Motion Path animations, and this is something more advanced in nature than the basic animation types explored so far. Motion Path animations play on a path that determines the direction in which the animated slide object moves across or around on the slide area. For example, you can move the slide object up, down, right, or left -- or on any preset or drawn motion path.

So that was about Higgs Boson and Comic Sans. But it looks like Comic Sans was the least of the problems on the CERN slides. The slides themselves were very, very bad.

Learn PowerPoint 2010 for Windows: Video Compression Options

July 12, 2012

Video Compression Options

PowerPoint 2010 has better video capabilities, accepts more video file formats, and can do a lot more with videos, including trimming of video clips. However, it also embeds all inserted video clips by default -- and this can result in huge presentations that contain huge video files! This ultimately occupies oodles of disk space and may also make PowerPoint work a wee bit slower. To tackle this problem, you can explore the new media compression abilities built right inside PowerPoint 2010 -- you no longer need any third-party media compression tool since PowerPoint's native Media Compression options make this task very easy indeed.

Four Segment Circle

This slide with four matrix-like segments within a circle can be used to illustrate an idea or a relationship – you can also rotate the entire concept graphic to place the segments differently. This graphic has been created using basic PowerPoint shapes -- in this four segment circle included within the sample presentation you download, all segments are editable. We have included two separate slides – one of them contains segments with picture fills and the other one is just filled with a solid color. To use these slides in your presentation, just copy-paste them to your presentation, and later edit them as required.

Learn PowerPoint 2011 for Mac: Exit Effects for Animations

July 11, 2012

Exit Effects for Animations

Now that we have explored both Entrance Effects and Emphasis Effects for animation in PowerPoint 2011, let us take a look at Exit Effects. Exit Effects determine how the animated slide object leaves the slide area. For example, the slide object can fade or fly out the screen area, or use any of the many other Exit Effects available within PowerPoint. Typical Exit animation effects are Disappear, in which an object just vanishes or Float Down, in which a slide object mimics the setting sun. You can also apply Exit animation effects to text objects so that words Spiral out of the slide. In all, there are 50 or more Exit animation effects that PowerPoint provides -- however, make sure you use animation sparingly to emphasize rather than to distract.

Indezine News: PowerPoint Keyboard Shortcuts

July 10, 2012

Geetesh Bajaj

For all of you who work with PowerPoint too little or too much, there's no debate about the fact that getting a task done quicker always results in great satisfaction. And getting your PowerPoint tasks done quicker is just one of the benefits you will gain by using keyboard shortcuts. Just the other day, someone in one of the several PowerPoint forums asked about a keyboard shortcut to get the Paste Special dialog in PowerPoint 2010 for Windows -- and someone actually recommended that you hold the Alt and E keys at the same time, let them go and quickly press S. And that answer response was chosen as the best answer! Well, you could have just pressed Ctrl+Alt+V together and saved the trouble -- and you would still see the Paste Special dialog box. This is just one instance -- trust me there are PowerPoint keyboard shortcuts that are not documented on Microsoft's own site or even in the program's Help.

Learn PowerPoint 2010 for Windows: Trim Video Clips

July 10, 2012

Trim Video Clips

PowerPoint 2010 enables you to insert video clips in your presentations, but many times the video clip inserted may be too long. Or maybe you just need to show part of the video clip, rather than wasting your audience's time showing them the entire clip. Of course, PowerPoint 2010 has the Player Controls bar that allows you to scrub and play the clip from exactly where you want it to begin -- but scrubbing a clip in front of an audience can appear unprofessional. Another alternative is to trim the video clip outside PowerPoint in a dedicated video program, and that would probably be the approach we would suggest if PowerPoint 2010 did not introduce a whole, new Trim Video option.

SlideShark and iPad 1

July 9, 2012

SlideShark and iPad 1

The iPad has been a runaway success, what with Apple releasing three generations of this amazing device in rapid succession. Yet, all these improvements in successive releases do not appeal to owners of older generation iPads. When newer iPads get launched with newer capabilities that will not work on the iPad bought just a month or two ago, then let's just say that users of older iPads do not feel too happy or enthusiastic -- nor do they want to abandon their perfectly nice iPad for a newer one. It is in times like these that the folks at SlideShark (a presentation app for the iPad) have released a new, free update that adds capabilities to the program for iPad 1 users!
