In an earlier tutorial, we've showed you how a distance cartogram can be created in PowerPoint 2013 by using the native shapes and the Merge Shape commands. Now that you have the "donut" structures and a small circle of the cartogram in place, let us create an actual cartogram from this structure.

If you want to use a table in your presentation, you can insert a new table on your PowerPoint slide and then enter content within this table as required. However, as it happens frequently, there may be a table already created within Excel or Word, or the table content may already be populated in a bunch of contiguous Excel cells. Whether you have, a ready-made table, or just a group of in contiguous cells in Excel, it is very easy to import it into PowerPoint 2013 as a table. Since the Copy and Paste options work similarly for both Excel and Word tables, it really does not matter what your source is, although in this example we are taking a table created within Excel.

Cartograms come in various types. The easiest and most effective cartograms you can create within PowerPoint are distance cartograms. These distance cartograms are now becoming extremely popular, but creating them requires a fair amount of time and knowledge. But we've made this task easier for you. Before we explore distance cartograms, let us first understand what a cartogram is. A cartogram is a combination of a chart/diagram and a map and represents data in a way that makes it easier for the audience to grasp the point. We will not explore the creation of Area Cartograms in PowerPoint since that's out of the scope of what you would be expected to create within a slide program! However, it's entirely and easily possible to create a Distance Cartogram using PowerPoint's native Shapes and the Merge Shape commands.

Drawing with the Scribble line tool is almost the same as drawing with the Freeform line tool -- but there is one vital difference. You don't need to double click to create an end point for your line with the Scribble tool. Also, once you start drawing with the Scribble tool, you can’t release the mouse button until you finish drawing. So, you can’t draw a perfect straight line as you would do with the Freeform line tool. The point where you release the mouse button will be the end point for the drawing. In many ways thus, the Scribble tool mimics real life usage as you draw with a pencil on a piece of paper. Your line stops drawing the minute you stop drawing it without having to double-click.

Many times, you can manage with a table within PowerPoint instead of an actual Excel spreadsheet. This is especially true when you want your table content to have a consistent look and feel with the rest of your slide. However, tables are dumb -- they cannot work with formulas or even do the most basic functions that Excel provides. So there may be times when you would want a real Excel spreadsheet within your slides rather than a table.

Until some time ago, you could insert a video clip from a web site such as YouTube into your PowerPoint slide. Within PowerPoint 2010, this Insert Online Videos option lets you easily achieve an acceptable result. Within the Insert tab of the Ribbon, you would find a Video button. Click the button, and there would be three options in the resultant menu. This included the Video from Web Site option. But magically, it may seem – this option may have disappeared from the Video drop-down gallery within PowerPoint 2010!

The Freeform drawing tool lets you draw anything almost like drawing with a pencil on a piece of paper. In addition, you can create straight lines as well --this dual capability of the Freeform tool provides you with more creative freedom. What's very important for you to know though is that the Freeform tool takes a while getting used to -- practice alone will make your attempts perfect!

PowerPoint 2013 provides you with more than one option to insert a table on your slide. Create a new presentation in PowerPoint 2003, and you will see that the first slide has two text placeholders. Now when you add another new slide, you don't see a slide similar to your opening slide. Rather than slide title and subtitle placeholders, this new slide has slide title and text placeholders.
