Once you have made Guides visible on your PowerPoint slides, they show up in the same position on all other slides within the presentation. You'll find that only two Guides, one horizontal and one vertical Guide are visible at first, and these two Guides intersect at the center of the slide. Most of the time, this might work for you, but you can actually add more Guides since these can help in positioning slide objects better across successive slides.

Sometimes we come across slides that can be hazardous to our vision! One look at a terrible slide, and it really doesn't matter if the content is great or not. We already looked at how you can overcome clichéd pictures, and we thereafter specifically looked at examples of handshake and globe pictures. Yes, those two visual concepts may be the most clichéd ones, but there’s yet another clichéd picture scenario – and that’s the picture of a phone operator! The phone operator is more often female than male. She has a big smile and looks at you while she is also holding a phone in one hand. Such pictures are often used anywhere people want to represent “communication”.

When guides are enabled for the first time within PowerPoint, you can just see two guides by default. These guides are two dotted lines, one horizontal and the other vertical. Do you notice that any object you move, resize, or align in PowerPoint 2016 actually helps make your task easy! Move it a little closer, resize a wee bit, or even try spacing slide objects and the screen shows all sorts of helpful indicators in the form of dotted lines. The red, dotted lines that show up and then disappear are Smart Guides. These made their debut in PowerPoint 2010 and allowed you to position objects easily. More improvements were added in PowerPoint 2013 that enabled you to see how much further you need to drag so that one object on the slide is as wide as another adjacent object. In fact, you can also evenly space out objects without accessing any Ribbon tabs or typing a number within a dialog box!

Globes again on your slides? And why not? A globe represents so much – just adding a picture of a globe can scream "international"! And maybe that's the problem? Maybe that's the cliché? Maybe it would be better to use something else as a visual rather than a globe? Now these questions have "maybe" written all over them, and you really cannot expect to get simple "yes" and "no" answers, as in "yes, you can still use a globe picture", or "no, you cannot". Even then, we can still discuss and find solutions for ourselves – not through direct answers, but through introspection.

Making gridlines visible on your slides in PowerPoint 2016 is only a good idea if you use the Grid feature to attain some results. If you are serious about using Grids to position slide objects with more precision, you must first visit the options available for changing Grid settings. Once you have played around with the grid settings, you are better equipped and prepared to explore how the Snap to Grid feature can help you accurately position and move slide objects such as pictures, shapes, or anything else you can select and move on a slide!

How many times have you seen the same globe visual used within a slide or even a picture of shaking hands? Or a picture of a phone operator, or even some people smiling while working in an office? These are clichés, but clichés on their own are not bad as a starting point to evolve further. Don't stop there though, and don’t decide that you have reached a conclusion with that predictable visual thought. In fact, there is not one but four ways to discover more original thoughts that go beyond clichés!
