PowerPoint includes proofing tools (spelling dictionaries, thesauri, and grammar rules) for more than one language. For example, if you use English as your main language, then Spanish and French dictionaries may already be installed. This enables you to spell-check Spanish and French words. To proof text in a foreign language, you need to install and enable proofing tools for the language you require. When these tools are installed, you can tell PowerPoint if a particular text placeholder or text box needs to be proofed as a foreign language.

Each logged-in user has a default custom dictionary accessible within PowerPoint and other Microsoft Office programs called RoamingCustom.dic. Additionally, you can create and use many more custom dictionaries. Over time, your custom dictionaries may become a very useful resource, especially since any custom dictionary loaded is used by all the Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. To share the dictionary files (.dic), you first need to find out where they are stored on your computer.

Do you wonder what happens behind the scenes when you run a spell check in PowerPoint or any other Microsoft Office program? This is what happens: PowerPoint looks at each word you have typed and matches those words with the entries listed within its dictionary. If it comes across any word that its dictionary does not contain, it goes ahead and marks that word as misspelled. Then it offers you suggestions for that supposedly misspelled word, so that you can replace that word with any other similar word found within its dictionary.

If you think about it, over the past century humans have been forced to adapt to technology and the structure it creates. It’s not “normal” to work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or write by typing on a QWERTY keyboard. Presentations are another example. We create linear slide decks, then conform our work conversations to the deck because that’s the way the technology works, by showing us one slide at a time, in order. It’s not the way we’d naturally talk and discuss a topic, but if we want to use technology, we have to do it technology’s way.
